COOMLOUGHA LAKE AND MOUNT CAHER

MACGILLICUDDY'S REEKS, COUNTY KERRY, 2024

In front of me, the peak of Caher emerges like an ancient silent giant, shrouded in clouds that slowly descend, like a solemn curtain.

The Carrauntoohil, guarded in the mist, almost seems to want to hide its strength, remaining a guardian of these wild and uncontaminated lands. At the foot of Mount Caher, Coomloughra Lough reflects the majesty of the mountains that tower above it. From this perspective, Caher appears even more imposing, its rocky walls rising steeply and looming, almost as if jealously guarding the lake at its feet. Caher and Carrauntoohil are the protagonists of many local stories.

One legend says that Carrauntoohil is inhabited by the spirit of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, the Celtic mythological hero who is said to rest here together with his warriors, the Fianna, waiting to return in times of need. It is a setting that embodies the rugged and wild beauty of the West of Ireland, a place where the silence is broken only by the whisper of the wind and the murmur of the water that creeps between the rocks. In this play of light and shadow, the mountain seems to come to life, becoming a living place, in constant dialogue with the sky and the lake.
