THE GLACIAL LAKE

LOUGH MUSKRY, GALTEE MOUNTAINS, ROSSADREHID, COUNTY TIPPERARY, 2023

Facing Lough Muskry, time seems to stand still, captured between the still waters and the silence of the mountains that surround it. This glacial lake, nestled in the heart of the Galtee Mountains, seems to hold age-old secrets, a place where nature reveals itself in all its majesty and quiet, inviting anyone to stop and listen to the echo of its history.

It is said that these waters were sacred to the ancient Celtic peoples, who celebrated rites in honor of the deities who protected the mountains. In particular, the lake takes its name from the mythical Celtic hero Fionn mac Cumhaill and his hunt for the magical boar, a creature that is said to roam these heights. Today, the place still retains that mystical aura, a secluded kingdom where modernity has no place. Lough Muskry is a refuge for the soul, a meeting point between earth and sky where the beauty of wild nature manifests itself in its purest form. Every shadow, every reflection on the crystalline waters is an invitation to explore not only the surrounding space, but also one’s deepest thoughts.

As I walk along the path that will take me to the lake, shrouded in fog and silence, I feel a sort of secret communion with the earth: a moment to leave behind the chaos of everyday life and rediscover one’s essence. Just as the lake reflects the rocky walls that tower above it, it also reflects the intimacy of those who contemplate it, a silent image of our bond with the most ancient and authentic nature.
