LOT’S WIFE

THE BALTIMORE BEACON, BALTIMORE, COUNTY CORK, 2024

On a windswept and storm-tossed coastline, Baltimore Beacon stands proud, a white obelisk that seems to pierce the sky. Perched on this promontory, it watches over the ocean like an ancient guardian, signaling sailors to the safe harbor of Baltimore, County Cork. Its slender, solitary presence dominates a breathtaking landscape, where waves crash against cliffs and the sky dances with ever-changing clouds.

This lighthouse, also known as “Lot’s Wife,” was built in 1849 to warn ships of dangers lurking along the coast. Erected shortly after a series of tragic shipwrecks, it has become a symbol of hope and guidance for those braving the tumultuous waters of the Atlantic.

This place is not only a beacon for sailors, but also a monument to resilience. During the terrible sack of Baltimore in 1631, when Algerian pirates attacked the village and deported its inhabitants, these shores witnessed desperation and courage. The Beacon, although built two centuries later, is a beacon of resistance, a reminder of the community that rose from its ashes. Here, in this far corner of Ireland, you can feel the strength of a land that has known storms and rebirths, and let yourself be guided by the soft light of this tower that, silent, continues to watch over the sea.
