PURPLE MOUNT FROM MOLL’S GAP

FROM MOLL'S GAP, SPRING, RING OF KERRY, KILLARNEY, COUNTY KERRY, 2024

In front of me is the breathtaking view of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. In the centre of the scene, Purple Mount dominates. Legend has it that the name “Purple Mountain” comes from the unique hues that its slopes take on during the sunset, as if the mountain were wrapped in a silken cloak.

This viewpoint, located on the famous Ring of Kerry, is called Moll’s Gap, it takes its name from Moll Kissane, a legendary 19th century innkeeper, famous for running a tavern in this remote place and for producing the best “poitín” in Ireland, a traditional black liquor. Here, the road winds through the mountains like a silver snake and the landscape unfolds in all its rugged beauty.
