THE FALLS

MAHON FALLS, COMERAGH MOUNTAINS, LEMYBRIEN, COUNTY WATERFORD, 2023

Ahead of me, Mahon Falls slides between dark rocks, like an ancient breath passing through the rugged Comeragh Mountains. Thick, tumultuous clouds gather above me, giving the landscape a dramatic, almost otherworldly aura.

The Comeragh Mountains are steeped in myth and legend, such as that of the “Cailleach Bhéara,” the Goddess of Winter in Celtic mythology. Stories say the Cailleach dwelt in places like this, where rivers and waterfalls were formed from the ice and frost she created. It is said that on the coldest days, her figure would appear among the shadows of the mountains, watching over anyone who dared to venture into her realm. Gazing at Mahon Falls, I feel as if the Cailleach’s presence is still here, hidden among the rocks, silently watching over those who traverse this wild landscape.

The waterfall, which descends impetuously, is not just water: it is a sign of strength and eternity, a reminder of the wild and untamed nature of Ireland.
